Introduction

letter_T.gif (935 bytes)he bird of prey stood just outside the orbit of the small gray planet called Maarus. Its sun burned bright and was nearing nova. The bird of prey’s first in command pace the bridge impatiently waiting for the signal from its Commander to beam up the landing party. They were a long way from the Klingon home world and the crew was looking forward to shipping home. The First just wanted to finish the mission and get out of this sector of space.

letter_A.gif (1027 bytes) light flashed on the console of the navigator. He looked over to the first. The first officer then gave him the signal to proceed. The navigator spoke the command into the intercom as he decloaked the ship. The transporter chief started the transporter sequence.

letter_A.gif (1027 bytes)s they decloaked, off the starboard bow another ship decloaked. A Romulan attack cruiser. It fired at the Klingon vessel using a new Romulan weapon.

letter_T.gif (935 bytes)he transporter sequence was already in motion. The landing party was in mid-beam up when the attack happened. The transporter chief worked franticly to keep the transmission. The power ebbed and with the next hit the transmission was lost and then again regained.

letter_T.gif (935 bytes)he ship's first was shouting orders at the bridge crew. The gunner was locking target on the Romulan ship. Unable to cloak again, they were dead in the in space unless he was able to disable the Romulan vessel.

letter_T.gif (935 bytes)he first wave of the novaing sun swept out from the exploding sphere. Hurling its incredible power outward towards the two combating ships and the planet they orbited.

As Captain David Leets looked over the first shift logs a strange and eerie feeling came over him. The universe itself seem to be calling out to as if its mere fabric was being wrenched and twisted. It only lasted a few seconds but was enough to catch his attention.

He looked around to see if any of his crew seemed to notice. The crew were busy at their post as if nothing had occurred. The ensign standing by waiting for him to sign off on the logs seemed to be lost in his own thoughts.

"Ensign," the captain called as he hand back the signed logs.

"Sir?"

"Did you feel something just then?"

"Sir?" the ensign clarified, "did I feel something?"

"You looked worried there. Lost in thought."

"Oh, I was thinking of the girl I am going to-I mean sir it was nothing important. I'm off duty as soon as I turn these logs in."

"I see. As you were."

"Yes sir," the ensign said as he turned to leave almost at a quick walk.

"Ensign?"

"Sir?"

"Don't rush to get those logs turned in. She'll still be waiting for you when you get there."

"Ah yes sir." The ensign slowed his pace as he made the lift.

Captain Leets turned back to observe the crew. He thought to himself, "didn't anyone feel that" If anyone of them had they weren't showing it. He looked them over again. Not a sign of change in any of them. He got from his chair and headed for the lift.

"Number One you have the Bridge."

"Yes sir," the first officer acknowledged taking his place in the chair.

The captain was heavy built, big boned and muscular. Some would call him stocky but not to his face. Though he would not be considered handsome by some you would call him charismatic. He carried himself with the type of authority that only a few possess.

The captain made his way down the corridor to sickbay. As he enter he saw that the Medical officer was examining ensign from the last watch.

The doctor looked up from his patient notice the captain. "I'll be right with you sir," he said as he returned to his duties. "Now tell me again when you got this feeling."

The ensign began in his thick Portuguese accent, "just moments ago. I was in my quarters when it came to me."

This peak the captain's interest. "Could it be?" he thought to himself then he spoke aloud, "what feeling?"

"I don't know how to explain it sir. It was like something was calling out to me. As if-," he stopped.

"As if somewhere in the universe something had change. Like the mere fabric of the universe was being torn apart and put back together again but differently," the captain finished for him.

"Yes that's it exactly. As if it was calling me to put it back," the ensign said excitedly.

The doctor looked wide eye. "Captain I think this experimental timportal cloak is starting to effect the crew. This is the third crew member who is told me the same thing. I-,"

"It will be four after you examine me," the captain interrupted.

"Captain?" the doctor said puzzledly.

"It happened to me just moments ago as well."

"I see," as he held up a tricorder to the captain. "We your PSI readings are up," he said as he read the data.

"I want you find out if there are any other crew members that have been effected and report directly to me your findings. I want to know if there is any danger to the crew and the ship."

"Well if you ask me I think its pretty fool hearty trying to control time any way."

"Doctor as much as I value your opinion, all I want to know is there any danger to the crew or the ship."

"Okay captain, I got. When you want my opinion you'll ask for it."

"Have your report to me by 1700 hours," the captain commanded as he started head for the door.

"And where do you think you're going?"

The captain stopped in his tracks. He started to say that he was going back to the bridge.

The doctor spoke before he said anything, "not before I finish examining you."

The captain looked as though he had something to say.

"Save it," the spoke again before he could get it out. "Up on that table right there. You want to know if there is any danger. We won't fully known now if I don't exam everyone will we," he stated rather than asked.

The gunner's weapon discharged its powerful force and pierced the shield of the Romulan ship disabling the weapons generator with a direct hit. The transporter chief pulled his cargo aboard and signal the first that it was done. The first gave the command for the cloak and turn the ship to finish the Romulan craft.

The Romulan craft discharged its secret weapon just as the wave of the novaing star hit both ships. There was a flicker of space and stars as if time and space itself was winking out of existence and both ships were gone.

No sign of debris or wreckage. The lone planet collapsed in upon itself as the wave of the novaing sun passed through it.

The captain got on the table pointed out to him without saying a word.

After his rather thorough examination by the doctor the captain headed down the corridor to the engine room. The engineers were busy with their duties and paid him little notice. But it wasn't the crew on duty here he came to see but a certain Doctor William Sheck. The Doctor was timportal fields engineer and on several occasions had ensured the captain that his doctrine was truly honorary and wished to be called Mister Sheck or even better Bill.

"Bill," the captain called to him as he had notice that Sheck was completely engrossed in the instruments at his control.

"Oh there you are Captain," said peering over the rims of his rather eye glasses. "I was wondering if I would see you this watch. I was just about to file my report for this hour. I-"

"Bill I think there is a problem with the temportal field," the captain interrupted.

"Preposterous! I've been right here all the time I would have noticed any major changes in the field. Except for some minor fluctuations a moment ago the field has held up beautifully. I-"

"Minor flux-How long ago and for how long?"

"Oh about some time about a half hour ago. I don't see what that has to d-"

"That would be about right. What would you say was the cause of it?"

"I'm not sure but I narrowed it down to some wave force outside of the ship but it's under control now. I-"

"So you don't think it was the field that caused the problem."

"Oh no, it was differently some outside force. I was able to determine that easily. It didn't come from in the field. I can show you the-"

"What was it then?"

"That I do not know but I can tell you that it came from the outside though and was a strong pulse of some sort."

"A pulse? What sort of pulse?"

"I'm not sure but we should be able

On the Klingon ship the First noticed a flicker of power and movement of the ship. When the power came back on the gunner noticed the Romulan ship death in his sites and took his shot. The Romulan craft flickered and then burst into a bright blue ball of flame and debris.

to track it to its source."

"Send your report to me and I'll have navigation track the pulse, " the captain said as he started to turn for the door. "Doctor," he paused to make sure he had Bill's attention. "Report any more disturbances immediately to me."

"Yes sir," he found himself acknowledging in an almost militarian form.

The captain exited the engine room.
